“I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly.”
Every year, we wait eagerly with anticipation. It’s the talk of the town. Everyone gets excited, young and old. We laugh about it, cry about it and watch it again and again and again… yes I’m talking about the John Lewis Christmas advert! That creative bunch at John Lewis astound us every year with heartfelt stories and emotion-filled music and the occasional jumping hedgehog.
It may seem silly to be thankful for a Christmas advert but it is something that has touched the hearts and imaginations of thousands of people each year. Today’s passage speaks of being thankful for the people around us and at Christmas time this is a great opportunity to pray for and thank those people. Maybe there is someone you work with who makes your day a little bit brighter just by doing something small, maybe there’s a child minder who goes above and beyond making your life that little bit easier.
After Mary found out that she was to give birth to the Messiah, she sang a song of thanksgiving and praise to God for the wonderful thing he was doing through her. She also looked backed, remembering all that God had done for her people. We, too, can take a step back and remember those who have helped us along our journey, pray constantly for them, thanking God for the blessing they are to us and then maybe show it in little ways that will brighten up their day. John Lewis may have gifts everyone loves but I think we can all give the gift of thanks to someone and pray for the special people they are to us.
Pray for those people who have touched and transformed your life by just being who they are.
Make or buy some mince pies or Christmas biscuits and give them to someone to say thank you for who they are.
